Duchess Park Secondary School Wins Top Design-Build Honours for CDBI

EDMONTON, October 14, 2011- Canadian Design Build Institute (CDBI) announced today the winners of its 9th Award of Excellence in design-build at the 2011 National Design-Build Conference, held October 13 & 14 this year in Edmonton, AB.

Judges representing Owners, Consultants and Design-Builders had a difficult task of selecting top contenders for this year’s CDBI Award of Excellence. When high-quality submissions vie for recognition in the Canadian Design-Build Institute’s Award of Excellence, the task involved a multi-faceted weighted rating system and lengthy discussion to get consensus.

Interestingly most of the projects were for public agencies, covering buildings and associated structures and a range of administrative options. Total project costs ranged from $6 million to $66 million. Some projects involved initial financing considerations and maintenance contracts. The continuity of the program-to-operation cycle, including designers, builders, suppliers and an array of specialty consultants, illustrates the emerging acceptance of the DB method of project delivery even for more complex multifunction public buildings.

This year the jury decided on a 1st & 2nd place winner.  The 1st place goes to the Duchess Park Secondary School – District 57 (Prince George). The project has considerable architectural merit and is a distinguished building. The project is presented by Western Industrial Contractors Ltd. (WIC) and Hughes Condon Marler Architects.

The 2nd place honour goes to the Gerald Schwartz School of Business St. Francis Xavier University. This submission builds on an adaptive use of buildings with an interpretation of the historic building style. The project was bid and built by Bird Design Build Inc.

Established in 2002, the CDBI Awards of Excellence are presented annually to recognize excellence in Canada's design-build industry and acknowledge teams whose projects contribute to the growth and stature of the design-build industry. Award recipients are selected based on the complexity of their design, adherence to the highest industry standards, and ability to demonstrate the benefits achieved through this increasingly popular alternative delivery mechanism.

The Canadian Design-Build Institute is the recognized voice of design-build practitioners in Canada, promoting and enhancing the proper utilization of the design-build method of procurement and contracting. Membership to the Institute is open to anyone who has an interest in design-build and includes 200 firms.
