Friday, March 16 13:00 depart from Westin

In April of 1862, Union troops directed rifled cannon fire at Fort Pulaski breaching the southeast angle. This event marked the first significant use of rifled cannon during combat.  The battle surprised military strategists worldwide, signaling the end of masonry fortifications. The park also includes scenic marsh and uplands that support a variety of animal life characteristic of southern barrier islands.

The experience continues to Tybee Island. The next stop features the Tybee Historic Lighthouse.  Ordered by General James Oglethorpe, Governor of the 13th colony, in 1732, the Tybee Island Light Station has been guiding mariners’ safe entrance into the Savannah River for over 270 years.

The Tybee Island Light Station is one of America's most intact having all of its historic support buildings on its five-acre site. Rebuilt several times the current light station displays its 1916 day mark with 178 stairs and a First Order Fresnel lens (nine feet tall). As the experience continues guests enjoy a driving tour of Tybee Island.

Friday, March 16 13:00 depart from the Westin

Duration: 1.5 hours tour and tea, 30 minutes travel each way This beautifully designed Gothic Revival home has served as a backdrop to the many faces and lives that tell the fascinating history of this Lowcountry area of South Carolina. Although the house was occupied after the war, the economy made it impossible to complete the interior. After several owners, efforts of restoration and a house fire, the Rose Hill Plantation House was purchased by the Middleton White Foundation in the mid 90’s and was restored as a private home. Additional option for Friday’s tour: A visit to Bluffton Township. Settled in 1825, as a summer resort for rice and cotton plantation owners, the town features antebellum homes, bed and breakfasts, churches, quaint shops and restaurants. Incorporated in 1852, Bluffton Historical Village is home to 10 antebellum homes and 19 post-Civil War buildings.
