CCA Pays Tribute to Excellence in Construction at Annual Awards Breakfast

PHOENIX, ARIZONA--The Canadian Construction Association today announced the recipients of its national awards recognizing excellence in the Canadian construction industry at its 84th Annual Conference taking place in Phoenix, Arizona. The awards were presented at the Awards Breakfast that also featured keynote speaker Stephen Lewis.

The recipients of the seven CCA awards handed out this morning include the following:

Gordon M. Vipond Memorial Safety Award - Recognizes a company's commitment and achievement to workplace safety. The recipient is Ledcor Industries Inc. located in Edmonton, Alberta. Following the death of Ledcor's founder in a worksite accident in 1980, Ledcor launched an aggressive program of safety enhancement. Today, their Health and Safety Program includes 21 separate elements that span a range of safety issues.

Jake Thygesen Award - Presented to a CCA member association who has shown leadership in education, recruitment, and image enhancement. The recipient is the Calgary Construction Association. Calgary's lobbying has resulted in millions of dollars of additional funding in the city's infrastructure and highways, and the association has launched education programs that have provided dozens of young Calgarians with work experience and employment.

Robert Saunders Memorial Award - Presented to a CCA general contractor in recognition of commitment and dedication to the Canadian construction industry. The recipient is Mr. Brad Greene, President of Project Management Services headquartered in St. John's, Newfoundland. Brad has worked tirelessly on behalf of the industry in his roles as Chair of the National Gold Seal Committee and an Executive Committee member of the Canadian Construction Association.

Award of Excellence - Presented to an individual in the roadbuilding and heavy construction sector who has demonstrated outstanding leadership. The recipient is Mr. John Redfern, Chairman of Lafarge Canada headquartered in Montreal, Quebec. John has served as Chair of numerous associations, including the Portland Cement Association, the Coalition to Renew Canada's Infrastructure, and the Association for Responsible Environmental Alternatives, and has raised millions of dollars for various local and national causes.

Environmental Achievement Award - Presented to a company demonstrating innovative or exemplary environmental conduct by a CCA member firm or association. The recipient is the Maritime Road Development Corporation located in New Brunswick. Environmental planning for this 195 KM, four-lane highway between Fredericton and Moncton was extensive, with a host of environmental measures taken throughout the design and building process.

Ernest Dobbelsteyn Award - Presented to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the CCA Trade Contractors Council and to the construction industry in general. The recipient is Mr. Don Oborowsky, President of Waiward Steel Fabricators located in Edmonton, Alberta. Don's commitment to supporting construction education is unsurpassed, as evidenced through his involvement in the Canadian Apprenticeship Forum, the Construction Sector Council, and his work as Chair on developing the Alberta "Build-Up" CD-Rom. He has also raised thousands of dollars in scholarships for up and coming construction practitioners.

Robert Stollery Award - CCA's most prestigious award, recognizing an individual with the qualities of a leader who applies the highest standards and principles in the construction industry. The recipient is Mr. Ira Greenspoon, Vice-President of Finance, Greenspoon Brothers Limited and President of Canadian Eagle Recyclers Incorporated, located in Toronto, Ontario. His work in associations is extensive, having served on the Boards of the Toronto Construction Association, the Council of Ontario Construction Associations, and the 2008 Toronto Olympic Bid Committee.
