Canadian Construction Industry Honours National Award Recipients
Cancun, March 11, 2005 - The Canadian Construction Association today presented its national awards honouring excellence in the Canadian construction industry. The awards ceremony took place during CCA's Annual Conference taking place in Cancun, Mexico.
The award recipients for 2004 are as follows:
CCA General Contractor Award of Excellence: Paul Douglas, President and Chief Operating Officer of PCL Constructors Canada Inc. (Edmonton, Alberta) is the recipient of the Robert Saunders Memorial Trophy. Paul's involvement in the construction industry dates back 25 years, and in that time, he has sat on some 10 Boards and Committees dedicated to improving the construction industry in Canada.
CCA Excellence in Innovation Award, sponsored by The Institute for Research in Construction: The 2004 recipient of the Hugh R. Montgomery Memorial Trophy is Dufferin Construction (Oakville, Ontario) for its Slipstone Extruded Wall System. This innovation in road construction uses a rubberized mould that wraps around a roller attachment and fits onto a standard slipforming machine for media and barrier wall construction. The result is to virtually eliminate the traditional hand-formed barrier process, and thereby reduce labour costs by two-thirds.
CCA Environmental Achievement Award, sponsored by Lafarge Canada Inc.: The 2004 recipient is Maple Reinders Inc. (Edmonton, Alberta) for its leading-edge environmental approach to the Jasper Wastewater Treatment Plant. On this project, Maple Reinders achieved immediate improvements to the aquatic environment and far exceeded Canada's most stringent environmental standards.
CCA Roadbuilders Award of Excellence: Barry Brown, President of Maple Leaf Construction Ltd. (Winnipeg, Manitoba). Barry has been a national leader in the Canadian roadbuilding and heavy construction sector. Having served as Chair of numerous roadbuilder and construction associations in Manitoba and Western Canada, Barry took on a national leadership role in 2002 by becoming the Chairman of the Canadian Construction Association.
CCA National Safety Award: PCL Constructors Inc. (Edmonton, Alberta) was awarded the Gordon M. Vipond trophy to recognize its commitment to company-wide safety practices and procedures. Ongoing training, communication, and safety reviews are part of PCL's comprehensive safety regime.
CCA Member Association Award of Excellence: The Calgary Construction Association stood out in 2004 for a number of the leading-edge initiatives it undertook, and as such, has been awarded the Member Association Award of Excellence. As one example, in conjunction with the first-ever woman Chair of the Canadian Construction Association, the Calgary Construction Association dedicated 2004 to reaching out to women, a campaign capped by a gala "Women in Construction" evening in May 2004.
CCA Community Leader Award, sponsored by Ed. Brunet et associes inc. Keith Gillam, Chairman and CEO of Vanbots Construction Corporation (Markham, Ontario). Keith Gillam, and to a larger extent, Vanbots, have exemplified the notion of giving back to the community. For instance, Keith spearheaded the $1.1 million fundraising and construction of the Community Safety Village of York Region. He has also been active with the Hospital for Sick Children, Easter Seals, the Children's Wish Foundation, the Canadian Cancer Society, Rugby Canada and the Canadian Ski Patrol, where he served as National Chair.
