Canadian Construction Association Pays Tribute to Industry's Best and Brightest
Kona, March 16, 2006 - The Canadian Construction Association today honoured excellence within the Canadian construction industry by recognizing the achievements of individuals, projects, and associations at its annual awards ceremony. The awards were presented during CCA's 88th Annual conference taking place in Kona, Hawaii.
The following awards and recipients were announced at today's awards ceremony:
CCA Person of the Year Award: The 2005 recipient is Paul McLellan, President and CEO of Mancon Holdings Ltd out of Regina, Saskatchewan. Paul has held almost every imaginable position within the construction industry. He has served as Chair of the Canadian Construction Association, President of the Regina and Saskatchewan Construction Associations, and currently serves as the Chair of the Saskatchewan Apprenticeship and Trade Certification Commission, and member of the Board of the Construction Sector Council and the Canadian Apprenticeship Forum. His commitment to the industry is unsurpassed.
CCA General Contractor Award of Excellence: The 2005 recipient is Richard Moore, President of Daoust Moore Construction Inc. in Ottawa, Ontario. Richard Moore has had an exceptional career as a general contractor. Starting his apprenticeship in 1976 with Ron Engineering, he quickly rose through the ranks, to become Vice-President with Westeinde Construction in 1984, to President of Fuller Construction in 1994, and President of Daoust Moore Construction in 1999. In that time, he has served as Chair of the Ottawa Construction Association, Chair of the Canadian Construction Documents Committee, Chair of the CCA Standard Practices Committee, and has served on numerous other industry related boards.
CCA Excellence in Innovation Award, sponsored by The Institute for Research in Construction: The 2005 recipient is Simlog of Montreal, Quebec for creating the world's first PC-based hydraulic excavator Personal Simulator for heavy equipment operator training. This simulation software will greatly enhance safety and productivity, increase profitability and predictability for companies who use it, and significantly reduce environmental impacts. Most importantly, it represents a step forward in future training needs for the entire industry.
An honourable mention was also awarded to Aluma Systems Canada Inc., for its 'Hy-Flyer' Forming System which debuted in Canada this past summer at the William Osler Health Centre Hospital in Brampton, Ontario.
CCA Trade Contractor Award of Excellence: The 2005 recipient Is Don Oborowsky, President of Waiward Steel Fabricators Ltd. of Edmonton, Alberta. Due to his leadership and industry commitment, Don becomes the first two-time winner of this award. Don has worked tirelessly over the past 35 years to build his company, Waiward Steel Fabricators, to become one of Canada's largest steel fabrication facilities. He has sat on countless industry Boards at the local, provincial and national level. Don exemplified himself when in 2005, he donated $1 million to the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology to create a new centre for steel technology and apprenticeships.
CCA Environmental Achievement Award: The 2005 recipient is Dufferin Construction Company for its Red Hill Valley project in Hamilton, Ontario. This project involved construction of an 8 kilometre extension of an existing Parkway through an ecologically sensitive area in Hamilton called the Red Hill Valley. Following extensive consultations, the project was modified to improve, and ultimately, excel at environmental stewardship. Modifications included realigning 7 kilometers of creek using natural designs; installation of 23 storm water quality ponds to receive runoff; restoration of land within the Red Hill Valley; and installation of sewer overflow pipes to reduce discharge from 27 times a year to 2-3 times. The results of these modifications have significantly enhanced the ecological and biological condition of the Red Hill Valley.
CCA Roadbuilders Award of Excellence: The 2005 recipient is Tom Brown, Vice-President of Ledcor Industries in Edmonton, Alberta. Tom Brown is, and always has been, a leader in the Canadian roadbuilding community. Having worked on projects throughout Western Canada, Tom joined Ledcor in 1989, and is now Senior Vice-President - responsible for projects totaling over $250 million. He has served as Chair of the Canadian Construction Association, the Alberta Roadbuilders and Heavy Construction Association, and the Alberta Construction Safety Association. He has received a number of leadership awards for his countless hours of service to the provincial and national roadbuilding industry.
CCA National Safety Award, sponsored by Vipond Inc.: The 2005 recipient is Dufferin Construction Company. In 2005, Dufferin implemented a comprehensive, 23 point Occupational Health and Safety Management System based on a British Safety Council system. Auditors concluded that the program was an astounding 100% in compliance. As a result, the lost time injury frequency rate was only 1 in 1.5 million man-hours worked, and is aiming to reduce that to zero in the year ahead.
CCA Member Association Award of Excellence: The 2005 recipient is the Ontario Road Builders Association (ORBA). ORBA marked a number of notable successes in 2005. Its "Ontario's Worst Municipal Roads" campaign generated outstanding media coverage. It developed and delivered a model high school heavy equipment program, and an Infrastructure Opportunities Partnership Program to attract university engineering students to civil construction. Its WSIB rebate program, and membership recruitment programs were big successes in 2005. ORBA contributed to member safety by delivering a workzone safety awareness promotional program. Overall, ORBA's innovative programs and hard work have earned it national recognition.
CCA Community Leader Award, sponsored by Ed. Brunet et associes inc.: The 2005 recipient is Don Oborowsky of Edmonton Alberta. Don is also recipient of the Trade Contractors Award of Excellence, but his communities endeavours have earned him double recognition. Don has devoted countless hours of volunteer time to the Alberta Foundation for Diabetes Research; has served as Chair of the Executive Cabinet for the Health Research Innovation Facilities; Co-Chair of the Edmonton Economic Development Manufacturing Cluster; and has contributed greatly to the Dow Centennial Cultural Centre in Fort Saskatchewan and the Davis Concert Organ in Edmonton. Don was instrumental in the construction of Sorrentino's Compassion House, a facility to support breast cancer patients and their families. Don's community activism truly knows no bounds.
An honourable mention went to Martinway Contracting Ltd of Rexdale, Ontario, for their involvement in the Millbrook Place project, which provides affordable housing in the Peel region of Ontario.
CCA Gold Seal Association Award of Excellence, sponsored by the Construction Sector Council: The 2005 recipient is the Association de la construction de Quebec - Region de Quebec. This award was created to recognize CCA member associations whose commitment to the Gold Seal program was unsurpassed. ACQ - Region de Quebec has met that standard of commitment. ACQ - Region has regular Board discussions on Gold Seal updates; has worked to ensure 2 Gold Seal designated projects in the Quebec City region; implemented ongoing staff training on Gold Seal; and promoted the program amongst stakeholders, governments, and its own members. ACQ - Region de Quebec has set a high standard among CCA member associations in showcasing this valuable program.
