Export Development Canada's Weekly Commodity Update
FINANCIAL TURMOIL PUTS COMMODITY PRICES IN TAILSPIN
EDC Economics’ all-commodity price index was down 20.5% for the month of October as decreases were broad-based across all sectors. Year on year, the EDC all-commodity price index was down 20.2% while the non-energy index fell 18.8%.
Commodity prices have been reacting to negative market sentiment, including fears of slowed growth. Further, commodities that have been used as a hedge against inflation (gold) have experienced dramatic price decreases as concerns over inflation are easing.
The decline in commodity prices coupled with investor flight into US treasuries saw the Canadian dollar depreciate from 94 cents to 82 cents on the US dollar. Click here to view the report.
