PCL Construction
The Fairmont Royal York Decarbonization Project is a shining example of how even historic landmarks can go green in style! Led by KingSett Capital and brought to life by PCL Constructors Canada, this ambitious retrofit transformed Toronto’s 94-year-old hotel into a modern marvel of sustainability—all while keeping it fully open for guests. The project earned Zero Carbon Building certification and slashed emissions by 80 per cent, the equivalent of taking 1,558 cars off the road each year!
Using cutting-edge tech like 3D modeling and lean construction planning, the team tackled big challenges—like weaving massive piping through tight, century-old spaces. From carefully coordinating material deliveries to making last-minute fixes (including restoring airflow before a ballroom wedding!), it was all about precision, teamwork, and innovation. With 90 per cent of old infrastructure recycled and big energy savings ahead, this project proves that preserving the past and protecting the future can go hand in hand.
