Ontario’s first institutional building of its kind, George Brown Polytechnic’s Limberlost Place is redefining what’s possible in sustainable construction.

As a 10-storey, net-zero mass timber facility on Toronto’s waterfront, the project demanded a fundamentally new way of building—setting ambitious targets for sustainability, safety, and schedule certainty from day one.

As construction manager, PCL Construction played a critical role from early preconstruction through to completion—working alongside George Brown Polytechnic, Moriyama Teshima Architects, Acton Ostry Architects, and partners to enable the vision to be realized in construction.

Recognizing the project’s uniqueness, PCL’s Toronto team collaborated with mass timber experts across the organization, leveraging their technical insight throughout preconstruction and construction. Embracing a growth mindset, its in-house workforce completed specialized training, building local expertise in mass timber construction.

Through its leadership, technical expertise, and ability to turn ambitious sustainability goals into built reality, PCL has set a new benchmark for environmental achievement—making them a deserving recipient of the Environmental Achievement Award.
