CCA Excellence in Innovation
The CCA Excellence in Innovation Award recognizes outstanding CCA member firms who have implemented innovative construction practices within the past two years. These practices must have been a “first-time” use or adoption for use in Canada, but may have been previously applied or used elsewhere.
The recipient is awarded with the Hugh R. Montgomery Memorial Trophy, which commemorates the life and work of Hugh R. Montgomery, a past president of CCA who gave generously of his time and experience for the general well-being of the industry.

Enviro-Ex Contracting Ltd.
The Highway 97 Cottonwood Hill Phase Two Slide project shows just how powerful technology can be in heavy civil construction. Faced with unpredictable slide activity threatening safety and access along a key BC highway, Enviro-Ex Contracting rose to the challenge with innovation and precision.
Partnering with Propeller Aero, the team used DirtMate GPS units on equipment to monitor earthworks in real time—tracking material movement, reducing rework, and boosting efficiency. Add in drones capturing high-res aerial images and generating 3D models, and the team had a clear, up-to-date view of this ever-changing site.
From real-time ground movement tracking to smarter scheduling and safer job sites, this high-tech approach helped stabilize a tricky section of highway while keeping workers and the public safe. It’s a smart, forward-thinking solution that set a new bar for geotechnical projects—proof that with the right tools and teamwork, no slope is too steep.
